5 Candle Care Tips for the Perfect Burn
March 1, 2026
You just received your hand-poured candle — exciting! Here’s how to make sure every burn is as beautiful as the first.
1. The First Burn Is the Most Important
When you light your candle for the very first time, let it burn until the wax melts all the way to the edges of the container. For most of our candles, this takes about 2-3 hours.
Why it matters: Soy wax has “memory.” If you blow it out before a full melt pool forms, it will tunnel down the center on future burns — wasting wax and shortening the life of your candle.
2. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn
Keep your wick trimmed to about 1/4 inch before each lighting. You can use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or even your fingers once the wax has cooled.
A trimmed wick gives you:
- A cleaner, more even flame
- Less soot on the container walls
- A longer-lasting candle
3. Burn in 2-4 Hour Sessions
We recommend burning your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time. After 4 hours, the wick can start to “mushroom” and the flame gets too large, which creates soot and can overheat the container.
The sweet spot: 2-3 hours per session gives you the best scent throw and the cleanest burn.
4. Keep It Away from Drafts
Placing your candle near a window, fan, or air vent causes the flame to flicker unevenly. This leads to:
- Uneven wax melt
- Soot on the container
- Reduced scent throw
Find a stable, draft-free spot and let the candle do its thing.
5. Know When to Say Goodbye
Stop burning your candle when about 1/2 inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning below this level can overheat the container and the surface it sits on.
Good news: Our containers clean up beautifully with warm soapy water. Repurpose them as planters, pen holders, or storage for small treasures.
